STEP 1: We admitted we were powerless over food — that our lives had become unmanageable.

GOING DEEPER: TYPE 5 & STEP ONE
↓
For those who have already worked Step One, this deeper exploration invites you to revisit powerlessness around self-sufficiency and withdrawal. For Type 5s, unmanageability often shows up as relying on distance, knowledge, or mental control to feel safe. Going deeper is a celebration of how far you’ve come — and an invitation to stay present, engaged, and connected without needing to retreat.
1) Beyond Admitting Powerlessness — Living It
Even after admitting powerlessness, Type 5s may still try to manage recovery through thinking, analyzing, or pulling back. Going deeper means practicing relational powerlessness — allowing yourself to be seen, supported, and involved without over-preparing or conserving.
- Deeper Reflection: “Where do I still rely on distance, knowledge, or withdrawal to feel safe instead of allowing support?”
2) From Coping to Celebrating Growth
For much of life, detachment was a coping strategy — a way to preserve energy and avoid overwhelm. Going deeper means noticing where you are already more available, expressive, and engaged. Step One becomes a celebration of participation, not a test of preparedness.
- Practice: Write a short note to yourself beginning with:“I celebrate that today I am no longer…”and“I’m growing into someone who…”
3) Embodied Presence
Powerlessness becomes grounding when you return from the mind into the body. This practice helps shift surrender from mental control into lived experience.
- Notice your posture, breath, and physical sensations.
- Bring to mind a moment when you felt quietly engaged without needing to withdraw.
- Breathe and repeat: “I can stay present without depletion.”
4) Healthy Separateness
Going deeper means recognizing that connection does not require losing yourself or your resources. You can participate fully while honoring your limits.
- Integration Prompt: “Where this week can I remain engaged without pulling away or conserving myself unnecessarily?”
Summary of Going Deeper:
For Type 5s, deeper Step One work is not about mastering understanding.
It is about learning to live surrendered — with presence, participation, celebration, and trust.
Powerlessness becomes freedom from isolation and a pathway into connection, guided by your Higher Power rather than by withdrawal or fear of depletion.
If this feels too deep right now, that’s okay.
