Step 12: Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
For Enneagram Type 8s, Step 12 is about turning intensity into strength for service, control into trust, and protection into empowerment. Eights long for truth and justice, often pushing against weakness or vulnerability. This step invites you to rest your power in your Higher Power and to share the courage you’ve found with others. Carrying the message becomes not only service to others but also a surrender of control—reminding you that real strength flows from humility and love, not force.
Living the Awakening
Your awakening is not about proving your strength—it’s about experiencing your Higher Power’s strength through surrender. As you share recovery with others, you strengthen your own freedom from domination and defensiveness. Step 12 teaches 8s that true power comes from honesty, service, and trust in your Higher Power’s care. Living the awakening means using your energy to protect, uplift, and empower rather than control or overpower.
Practicing the Principles
- Strength with humility: Use your voice boldly, but surrender outcomes to your Higher Power.
- Service over control: Support others without dominating or fixing.
- Vulnerability over defensiveness: Share your heart, not just your strength.
- Justice with compassion: Stand for truth while remembering gentleness and grace.

Discernment: Pause for Service

- “Am I acting from courage and surrender—or from fear of being weak?”
- “What is the simplest helpful action I can sustain?”
Quick Scripts (Strong, Humble Service)
- Carrying the message: “I can share how surrender gave me more strength than control ever did.”
- Checking consent: “Would it be helpful if I shared how I worked this step?”
- Setting limits: “I’m available to help with this one action, not everything.”
- Releasing control: “I trust your Higher Power to guide you. I can walk with you, but I can’t walk it for you.”
Reflection Questions
- How do I know when I’m serving from surrender instead of control?
- What service commitment helps me use my strength with humility?
- Where am I still trying to dominate instead of trust my Higher Power?
- How can I use my passion to empower without overpowering?
Prayer for Step 12 – Type 8
Higher Power, thank you for awakening me to true strength through surrender. When I want to control or dominate, remind me to trust your power. Let me carry your message by empowering others, not overpowering them. Amen.
