GOING DEEPER: TYPE 1 & STEP SEVEN
↓
For returning participants: This deeper pass of Step Seven invites you to celebrate your progress by noticing something powerful: you can now see the moment the “inner corrector” shows up — and you can choose a softer, truer humility with God’s help. For Type 1, humility is not lowering your standards; it’s releasing the belief that you must carry the weight of being “right” in order to be okay.
Gentle reminder: Humility for Type 1 is letting God remove the pressure — not adding more pressure.
1) Humility in Motion — From “Fix It” to “Let God”
Aim: Catch the exact moment you tighten, correct, or judge — and invite God into that moment.
- Deeper Reflection: “Where am I still trying to perfect myself instead of inviting God to transform me?”
- Micro-Prayer (10 seconds): Inhale: “I release perfection.” Exhale: “God, soften me.”
- Body Cue: Unclench jaw, soften forehead, drop shoulders.
- Celebration cue: The moment you notice the critic is evidence you’re no longer living inside it.
2) Shortcomings as Distorted Gifts
Aim: Name the gift beneath the defense and ask God for its right-sized expression.
Use this grid:
| Shortcoming (Defense) | Gift Underneath | Balanced Expression (with God) |
|---|---|---|
| Perfectionism | Desire for goodness | Grace-filled excellence |
| Harsh self-criticism | Conscience / responsibility | Compassionate discernment |
| Rigid “right way” | Integrity | Flexible wisdom |
| Self-righteousness | Care for what is true | Humility that stays teachable |
- Prompt: “Which gift am I most ready for God to soften into peace this week?”
- Celebration cue: You are not losing goodness — you are gaining freedom.
3) A Type 1 Seventh Step Prayer (Personalizable)
Aim: Pray your own words daily. Insert one defense you identified.
“Higher Power, I am willing that You have all of me — my goodness and my pressure. Please remove from me the defense of __________ when it blocks love and usefulness. Teach me progress over perfection, peace over proving, and mercy toward myself and others. Amen.”
4) Surrender Reps — 3 Daily Micro-Practices (3–5 minutes total)
- Morning: Choose one place to practice “good enough” today and offer it to God.
- Midday: When you notice judgment, pause one breath and whisper: “God, soften me.”
- Evening Examen: Write 3 lines: Where I softened • What changed • Thank You.
- Celebration cue: These small reps are humility in real life — not theory.
5) Humility with People — Repair-Ready Posture
Aim: Practice connection without correction.
- Practice Line: “I notice I get rigid when I’m afraid. I’m asking God to help me relax here.”
- One listening rep: Ask, “How was that for you?” and receive the answer without defending.
- Let someone else’s way stand: Choose one moment to not fix, improve, or correct.
6) “Let God Remove” — Not Forcing the Timeline
Aim: Release outcome management. Notice subtle shifts: less self-attack, quicker softening, more patience.
- Gratitude Scan (30 seconds): Name one moment today you chose peace over pressure.
- If you relapse into criticism: Return to prayer; recommit without punishment.
- Celebration cue: Every return is growth. God is teaching you mercy.
Summary of Going Deeper: Step Seven for Type 1 is the alchemy of integrity and gentleness. You bring willingness; God brings transformation — turning perfectionism into peace, criticism into discernment, and rigidity into wisdom. This is goodness you can live inside.
If this feels too deep right now, that’s okay.
