Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Spiritual Principle: Service

Assignment 1:

  1. Read, highlight, and jot down questions/comments from the Working with Others section of the the Big Book.
  2. Answer the following questions.
    • Can you see how working with other compulsive overeaters will give you immunity from your disease? (Big Book, pg. 89)
    • Can you see why you shouldn’t spend time on people who don’t want to stop eating?
    • Do you understand that “helping others is the foundation stone of your recovery? (Big Book, pg. 97)
    • It doesn’t matter what a sponsee’s situation is – they can recover. (Big Book, pg. 98) Dependence on HP instead of dependence on other people. Recall when you started to rely on a HP. What was your process? How did you start?
    • Review the promises of the 12th Step on page 100. Which one do you look forward to the most?
    • What is your job now? (Big Book, pg. 102)
Do not be discouraged if your prospect does not respond at once. Search out another alcoholic and try again. You are sure to find someone desperate enough to accept with eagerness what you offer. We find it a waste of time to keep chasing a man who cannot or will not work with you. If you leave such a a person alone, he may soon become convinced that he cannot recover by himself. To spend too much time on any one situation is to deny some other alcoholic an opportunity to live and be happy. (Big Book, page 96)

Optional Extra Credit:
