Step 11: “Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood God, praying only for knowledge of God’s will for us and the power to carry that out.”

For Enneagram Type 7s, Step 11 is about deepening conscious contact with your Higher Power—not through constant activity or escape, but through stillness and presence. Sevens often avoid pain and chase new experiences to stay upbeat, but Step 11 invites you to remain present with God, even in discomfort. Here, prayer becomes less about seeking exciting answers and more about listening for God’s steady direction. Meditation becomes the quiet place where you release distraction, face reality with courage, and rest in your Higher Power’s joy and care.

Daily Practices for Step 11

  • Morning Prayer: Begin the day by asking: “Higher Power, help me stay present today. Teach me to welcome both joy and challenge as part of Your will.”
  • Meditation: Because Sevens struggle with stillness, start small—3–5 minutes of breath prayer, body scan, or focusing on gratitude. Increase gradually. Try Insight Timer, or the Surrender School Step 11 meditation.
  • Affirmations/Mantras: These affirmations/mantras counter avoidance and restlessness, and can be used throughout the day.

    • I am safe to stay present with what is.
    • Joy deepens when I embrace all of life.
    • I do not need to run from pain; God is with me in it.
    • Slowing down connects me to my Higher Power.
    • Enough is here in this moment.
    • My Higher Power is greater than my fears of limitation.
    • I can rest instead of escape.
    • Peace comes from presence, not distraction.

Journaling / Two-Way Prayer:

Two-Way Prayer is a simple practice of writing to your Higher Power, listening, and then writing what you sense your Higher Power saying back. It helps quiet restless thoughts and opens you up to your Higher Power’s grounding truth.

  • Begin by reading program material and asking a question from your Type 7 lens, such as: “Higher Power, what do You want me to know about staying present today?” Or ask generally: “Higher Power, what do You want me to know/do right now?”
  • Pause, breathe, and notice the urge to skip ahead or distract yourself. Stay with the silence and listen for God’s steady guidance.
  • Write whatever words, phrases, or impressions come to you.

A few additional two-way prayer prompts for a type-7 are:

  • “Higher Power, how do You want me to face discomfort today?”
  • “Where am I mistaking escape for freedom?”
  • “What truth do You want me to embrace when I want to avoid pain?”
  • “What distraction do I need to release to hear Your will?”

Discernment Pause

Before seeking escape, stimulation, or distraction, pause and ask:

  • “Is this truly my Higher Power’s will for me, or am I avoiding reality?”
  • “Will this choice bring me presence—or scatter me further?”
  • “What is mine to stay with now, and what can I entrust to God?”

* Discernment means aligning your choices with your Higher Power’s truth, not with the compulsion to escape. Over time, it trains you to embrace reality with courage and joy.

Evening Review (Spiritual Awareness)

Unlike Step 10’s focus on resentments and harms, Step 11’s evening review is about presence and grounding. Gently reflect on the following:

  • Where did I notice God’s presence today?
  • When did I stay present instead of escaping?
  • Where did I avoid discomfort or distract myself?
  • What guidance did I sense about God’s will for me?

* Close with gratitude: “Thank You, God, for meeting me in this moment, just as it is.”

Prayer & Meditation Choices for Type 7s

  • Prayer for Presence: “God, help me remain present with life as it is. Teach me to trust that Your joy is found in every moment.”
  • Breath Meditation: Inhale: “I am here.” Exhale: “This is enough.”
  • Gratitude List: Each night, write 3 blessings you found in ordinary or difficult moments.
  • Body Practices: Try grounding exercises—feeling your feet on the floor, placing a hand on your chest—when restless.
  • Silence: Spend 2–3 minutes sitting quietly, letting God’s steady presence anchor you.

Step 11 Prayer for Type 7

Higher Power,
Teach me to rest in Your presence instead of escaping. Quiet my restless mind and show me the joy of staying with what is. Remind me that true freedom comes from You, not from distraction. Let my prayers be honest, my meditations be grounding, and my heart open to Your will. Amen.

By practicing stillness, discernment, and two-way prayer, you release distraction and rest in the truth that this moment is enough.
