GOING DEEPER: TYPE 3 & STEP FIVE

For returning participants: This deeper pass of Step Five invites Type 3s to share not only what they did “wrong,” but the image, performance, or identity they were trying to protect. This is not about failure — it is about holy honesty that restores connection with God, your true self, and others.

Safety & care: Agree with your sponsor on pauses, prayer, and time-outs. You may stop at any time. This is honesty with compassion.

1) From Confession to Communion

Aim: Move beyond listing wrongs to revealing the heart beneath the image. Share the fear, pressure, or identity you were trying to maintain.

  • Deepening prompts:
    • What was I afraid would happen if I stopped performing or achieving?
    • What image was I trying to protect in this situation?
    • What truth about who I really am feels safe to say out loud now?
  • Two-sentence share (template):
“When I [behavior], I was protecting my image of [success/value/competence]. It cost [impact]. I am willing to practice [new way] with God’s help.”

2) Somatic Honesty — Let the Body Tell the Truth

Aim: Notice where your body still holds performance or pressure.

  • 1-minute check-in: Chest, jaw, stomach — where is the tension?
    Inhale: “I am enough.”
    Exhale: “I release performance.”
  • Share the body cue with your sponsor:
“As I say this, I feel it in my ____.” Naming it helps dismantle the persona and bring presence.

3) Exact Nature = Pattern + Purpose

Aim: Name the pattern and the purpose it served (success, validation, safety).

  • Add this mini-grid to a few key shares:
    1. Trigger (failure, comparison, being unseen)
    2. Protection Strategy (overwork, image management, emotional detachment)
    3. Impact (on authenticity, intimacy, self-trust)
    4. What God Offers Now (rest, truth, presence)
  • Reflection: “What strength became overgrown here (drive, competence, influence), and how will I bring it back into balance?”

4) Sponsor Dialogue That Disarms Performance

Aim: Invite feedback without managing how you are seen.

  • You say: “Please reflect one pattern you notice and one more honest alternative I could try.”
  • Sponsor says: “Would you be open to considering…?”
  • Your response: “Thank you. I will practice [specific truth-based action] this week.”

5) Confidentiality Ritual — Laying Down the Image

Aim: Anchor safety and release identity control.

  • Begin with: “God, I release who I think I need to be.”
  • End with: “I return my true self to Your care.”
  • Optional closing gesture: hands open, brief silence.

6) Gentle Bridge to Steps 6–9

  • Willingness seed (6–7):
Which performance or image pattern am I most willing to let God soften?
  • Amends readiness (8–9):
Where has my drive or self-promotion impacted others?

Summary of Going Deeper: This deeper pass of Step Five invites Type 3s to move from managing their image to revealing their real self. By naming the fear beneath performance, they discover that worth does not come from achievement — it comes from truth, presence, and connection. With God’s help, success becomes authentic, and identity becomes rooted in being rather than doing.

If this feels too deep right now, that’s okay.
