GOING DEEPER: TYPE 4 & STEP SIX
↓
For returning participants: This deeper pass of Step Six shifts from “understanding your pain” to letting grace reshape the story you tell about yourself. For Type 4s, readiness is not becoming “less intense” — it’s letting God right-size your emotions so they become truthful guides, not identities. This page is meant to help you celebrate how far you’ve come: you can now notice the moment you merge with a mood and choose a new way with God’s help.
Gentle reminder: Step Six is not a self-improvement project. It is a willingness practice. Your depth is not the problem — the overuse of longing, comparison, and emotional fusion is what becomes unmanageable.
1) Name the Grip, Invite the Grace
Aim: Catch the exact moment your system reaches for identity through emotion (longing, shame, comparison, “something is missing”) — and invite God into that moment.
- Deeper Reflection: “Where do I still believe my feelings keep me safer than God does?”
- Micro-Prayer (10 seconds):
Inhale: “I am held.”
Exhale: “I release the story.” - Celebration cue: If you can notice the moment you fuse with a mood, you are already growing. Awareness is readiness beginning.
- Form Tie-in: On your Readiness Assessment, circle the one defense that spikes most this week (comparison, withdrawal, self-absorption, shame). That’s your laboratory.
2) Defect → Distorted Gift → Balanced Gift
Aim: Reframe “defects” as overgrown strengths that fear amplified — then ask God for the balanced expression.
Use this grid:
| Overdone Pattern | What It Was Protecting | Balanced Expression (with God) |
|---|---|---|
| Longing / “missing” | Hope / meaning | Gratitude + meaning in the present |
| Comparison | Worth / uniqueness | Authenticity without ranking |
| Emotional fusion | Feeling real / alive | Depth with grounded presence |
| Withdrawal / self-protection | Fear of rejection | Vulnerability with boundaries |
- Prompt: On your Defense Analysis, add one line: “Balanced expression I’m asking God for.”
- Celebration cue: Seeing the gift beneath the distortion is a sign you’re moving from shame into wisdom — and that is deep recovery.
3) Emotional Readiness Check (Body-Based)
Aim: Let the body tell the truth. Readiness is felt before it is accomplished.
- Scan: throat / chest / belly — heavy, fluttery, or settled?
- Label: “Swirly/absorbed” (pulled into the mood) → “Grounded/soft” (present with God).
- Note on the Readiness Form: beside your 1–5 number, jot the body state (e.g., “3 + chest softening”).
- Celebration cue: If you can feel your feet, you can return to God in the moment — that is grace at work.
4) One Opposite Action a Day
Aim: Practice willingness in motion. Do one small opposite action to weaken emotional fusion and strengthen grounded presence.
- Choose one opposite action today: name one true thing you’re grateful for, share honestly without dramatizing, do one ordinary task with love, or connect instead of withdrawing.
- After-Action Note: “What did my mood predict? What actually happened?”
- Optional: Before acting, place a hand on your heart and say: “I can belong here, as I am.”
- Celebration cue: One small “ordinary” action is courage. You are teaching your soul that meaning can live in the present, not just in longing.
5) “Willing to be Willing” Prayer
Aim: Name willingness without strain. Let humility be simple.
- Prayer:
“God, I’m willing to be willing. Please right-size my emotions into truth, my longing into gratitude, my comparison into compassion, and my withdrawal into connection.” - Celebration cue: If you can pray this sincerely, humility is already happening — even if the feelings still rise.
6) 7-Day Readiness Rhythm
Aim: Build readiness through repetition and care — not perfection.
- Day 1–2: Notice the story (“I’m missing something”) → breathe → micro-prayer.
- Day 3–4: One opposite action per day; jot impact.
- Day 5: Share one discovery with sponsor/group (especially a moment you chose presence over mood).
- Day 6: Re-rate willingness; note body shift.
- Day 7: Gratitude list for any ordinary moments that felt meaningful.
- Celebration cue: Progress is measured by presence and truth — not by intensity or the absence of emotion.
Summary of Going Deeper:
Readiness for a Type 4 is the courage to release the identity of the mood and return to God in the present. You are not losing your depth — you’re letting God refine it into grounded authenticity. The fact that you can notice the story, feel your body, and practice one new response is evidence of how far you’ve come.
If this feels too deep right now, that’s okay.
