GOING DEEPER: TYPE 8 & STEP FIVE
↓
For returning participants: This deeper pass of Step Five focuses on sharing not only what you did, but the tender truth you were protecting (fear of betrayal, being controlled, or being made small). This is not about humiliation — it is about holy honesty that restores connection with God, yourself, and others.
Safety & care: Agree with your sponsor on pauses, prayer, and time-outs. You may stop at any time. This is courage with care.
1) From Confession to Communion
Aim: Move beyond listing wrongs to revealing the heart beneath the armor. Share motives, fears, and the protection strategy you used (confront, shut down, take over, cut off).
- Deepening prompts:
- What was I afraid would happen if I did not control this?
- Which tender part of me needed God’s protection in that moment?
- What truth about me is safe to say out loud now?
- Two-sentence share (template):
“When I [behavior], I was protecting myself from [core fear]. It cost [impact]. I am willing to practice [new way] with God’s help.”
2) Somatic Honesty — Let the Body Tell the Truth
Aim: Notice where your body still armors up. Let Step Five be felt, not just spoken.
- 1-minute check-in: Jaw, shoulders, belly — where is the grip?
Inhale: “I am held.” Exhale: “I release my guard.” - Share the body cue with your sponsor:
“As I say this, I feel it in my ____.” Naming it reduces shame and control.
3) Exact Nature = Pattern + Purpose
Aim: Name the pattern and the purpose it served (protection).
- Add this mini-grid to a few key shares:
- Trigger (disrespect, uncertainty, perceived betrayal)
- Protection Strategy (confront / take over / shut down / cut off)
- Impact (on safety, voice, trust)
- What God Offers Now (boundary + care, truth + gentleness)
- Reflection:
What strength was overgrown here, and how will I bring it back into balance?
4) Sponsor Dialogue That Disarms Defensiveness
Aim: Invite corrective truth without power struggle.
- You say: “If you see a blind spot, please reflect it with one example and one alternative I could try.”
- Sponsor says: “Would you be open to considering…?”
- Your response: “Thank you. I will sit with that and try [specific practice] this week.”
5) Confidentiality Ritual — Laying Down the Armor
Aim: Anchor safety and release control.
- Begin with: “God, hold what I cannot.”
- End with: “I return these stories to Your care.”
- Optional closing gesture: hands open, brief silence.
6) Gentle Bridge to Steps 6–9
- Willingness seed (6–7):
Which one protection strategy am I most willing to let God right-size? - Amends readiness (8–9):
Whose impact can I now own with humility and no defense?
Summary of Going Deeper:
This deeper pass of Step Five invites the Type 8 to move from admitting wrongs to revealing the guarded heart. Naming protection without shame transforms strength into trustworthy power — aligned with God, safe for you, and safe for others.
If this feels too deep right now, that’s okay.
