STEP 2:
“Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.”

GOING DEEPER: TYPE 8 & STEP TWO
↓
For those who have already worked Step Two, this deeper exploration invites you to see how your belief in a Higher Power continues to evolve. For the Type 8, faith often begins as a struggle between trusting self-reliance and trusting divine care. The deeper work is to experience Higher Power not as a rescuer or ruler, but as a loving Presence that collaborates with your strength instead of competing with it.
1. Move From Intellectual Belief to Embodied Trust:
Type 8s often “believe” in a Higher Power but still rely on their own determination to stay safe and sane. Going deeper means letting belief sink from the head to the heart to the body—feeling divine strength move through you, not from you.
- Deeper Reflection: “Where in my body do I still brace for control? Can I soften there and let my Higher Power’s love be the real source of my strength?”
2. Transform Resistance Into Relationship:
Step Two is not only about believing that a Power can restore you—it’s about developing a relationship with that Power. For Type 8s, this may mean re-imagining God not as an authority to resist, but as an ally who honors your courage and truth-telling.
- Practice: Write a short “conversation” with your Higher Power. Let your protective voice speak first, then invite your Higher Power to answer. Listen for reassurance rather than direction.
3. Healing the Wound of Betrayal:
Many Type 8s carry a deep memory of betrayal—times when trust was met with pain. This wound often fuels the impulse to control. The deeper journey of Step Two is to let your Higher Power begin healing that wound, showing you that trust can be safe again.
- Inquiry: “What betrayal still whispers, ‘No one will protect you but you’? What would it feel like if your Higher Power whispered back, ‘I’ve got you now’?”
4. Trust as a Form of Power:
True power for Type 8s comes when trust becomes their foundation rather than control. This power is steady, compassionate, and contagious—it restores sanity because it replaces domination with presence.
- Integration Prompt: “This week, where can I practice power that flows from trust instead of control?”
Summary of Going Deeper: In the second pass through Step Two, the invitation for Type 8s is to transform belief into intimacy—to let God, or whatever name you use for your Higher Power, be experienced as a trusted companion. Trust becomes the new expression of strength, and surrender becomes the new definition of sanity.
