Step 11: “Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood God, praying only for knowledge of God’s will for us and the power to carry that out.”

For Enneagram Type 3s, Step 11 is about deepening conscious contact with your Higher Power—not through achievement or performance, but through authenticity and presence. Threes often try to prove their value by succeeding or appearing accomplished, but Step 11 invites you to rest in your Higher Power’s love without needing to earn it. Here, prayer becomes less about asking how to win approval and more about listening for God’s will for your true self. Meditation becomes the quiet place where you let go of striving and allow yourself to be loved simply for who you are.

 


Daily Practices for Step 11

  • Morning Prayer: Begin the day by asking: “Higher Power, help me release the need to perform. Show me how to live today in honesty and alignment with Your will.”
  • Meditation: Because stillness can feel unproductive for Threes, start with guided meditations on authenticity, self-acceptance, or truth. Try 5 minutes and build up gradually. Use Insight Timer, or the Surrender School Step 11 meditation.
  • Affirmations/Mantras: These affirmations/mantras counter image-consciousness and can be used throughout the day.

    • I am valued for who I am, not for what I achieve.
    • My true worth comes from God, not from accomplishments.
    • Slowing down connects me to my Higher Power.
    • Authenticity is more powerful than performance.
    • I do not need to earn love through success.
    • Rest and honesty are holy forms of action.
    • My Higher Power calls me to be real, not perfect.
    • Letting go of appearances allows me to live freely.

 


Journaling / Two-Way Prayer:

Two-Way Prayer is a simple practice of writing to your Higher Power, listening, and then writing what you sense your Higher Power saying back. It helps quiet the drive to perform and opens you up to your Higher Power’s loving truth.

  • Begin by reading program material and asking a question from your Type 3 lens, such as: “Higher Power, what do You want me to know about being loved beyond success?” Or ask generally: “Higher Power, what do You want me to know/do right now?”
  • Pause, breathe, and listen for what your Higher Power might be telling you. What are you being guided to understand, release, or embrace?
  • Write whatever words, phrases, or impressions come to you.

A few additional two-way prayer prompts for a type-3 are:

  • “Higher Power, how would You like me to be authentic today?”
  • “Where am I confusing achievement with worth?”
  • “What truth do You want me to rest in before I act?”
  • “What mask do I need to lay down to listen for Your will?”

 


Discernment Pause

Before automatically working harder, performing, or saying yes to gain approval, pause and ask:

  • “Is this truly my Higher Power’s will for me, or am I doing this to look successful?”
  • “Will this action bring authenticity—or just recognition?”
  • “What is mine to do from truth, and what can I release?”

 

* Discernment means aligning your choices with your Higher Power’s truth, not with external approval. Over time, it teaches you to act from authenticity rather than image.

 


Evening Review (Spiritual Awareness)

Unlike Step 10’s focus on resentments and harms, Step 11’s evening review is about presence and spiritual honesty. Gently reflect on the following:

  • Where did I notice God’s presence today?
  • When did I choose authenticity over performance?
  • Where did I slip into striving or image instead of truth?
  • What guidance did I sense about God’s will for me?

 

* Close with gratitude: “Thank You, God, for valuing me as I am, beyond what I do or achieve.”

 


Prayer & Meditation Choices for Type 3s

  • Prayer for Authenticity: “God, free me from the need to perform. Teach me to live in honesty and alignment with Your will.”
  • Breath Meditation: Inhale: “I am loved.” Exhale: “I release performance.”
  • Gratitude List: Each night, write 3 moments when you were honest and real with yourself or others.
  • Body Practices: Notice tension in your chest or jaw from striving; breathe deeply and soften.
  • Silence: Spend 2–3 minutes sitting quietly with God, without doing anything.

 


Step 11 Prayer for Type 3

Higher Power,
Teach me to rest in Your presence without performing. Remove my need to succeed to feel worthy, and help me hear Your will. Show me how to live from truth and authenticity. Let my prayers be honest, my meditations be peaceful, and my heart open to being loved as I am. Amen.
