Type 8 Lionhearted Protector
STEP 1:
“We admitted we were powerless over food — that our lives had become unmanageable.”

GOING DEEPER: TYPE 8 & STEP ONE

For those who have already worked Step One, this deeper exploration invites you to not only revisit powerlessness and to see how the same impulse to be strong can subtly reappear even in recovery. Now, your powerlessness becomes not a confession of weakness, but a celebration of growth. It is this powerlessness that invites you through the doorway into living each day with more freedom, intimacy, and grounded strength. And you, now you get to show up with an even greater presence, softer edges, and a new willingness to be led rather than driven.

1) Beyond Admitting Powerlessness — Living It

Even after admitting powerlessness, Type 8s may still try to “manage” recovery through strength, discipline, or intensity. Going deeper means practicing relational powerlessness — staying open and receptive when others’ choices, pace, or needs differ from your own.

  • Deeper Reflection: “Where do I still try to control my recovery, others, or God — even subtly — in the name of strength?”

2) From Coping to Celebrating Growth

For much of life, control was a coping strategy — a shield. Going deeper means noticing the places you are already softer, braver, and more open. This step becomes a celebration of progress, not a spotlight on what is broken.

  • Practice: Write a short note to yourself beginning with:
“I celebrate that today I am no longer…”
    and
    “I’m growing into someone who…”

3) Embodied Presence

Powerlessness becomes easier when you can feel your body and return to the present moment. This visualization helps turn surrender into aliveness rather than collapse:

  • Notice your feet, breath, and shoulders softening.
  • Bring to mind a place where you once felt vividly alive — the air, the sounds, the light.
  • Breathe and repeat: “I can feel this kind of aliveness here, now, without needing control.”

4) Healthy Separateness

Going deeper means recognizing that you can walk beside others without directing, protecting, or absorbing their process. This restores dignity to everyone involved and strengthens connection.

  • Integration Prompt: “Where this week can I let someone support me — without taking charge of their experience or protecting them from it?”

Summary of Going Deeper:
For Type 8s, deeper Step One work is not about “admitting failure.”
It is about learning to live surrendered — with presence, humility, celebration, and trust.
You begin to experience powerlessness not as loss of strength, but as the path to freedom, connection, and real power guided by your Higher Power.

If this feels too deep right now, that’s okay.
