GOING DEEPER: TYPE 7 & STEP FIVE
↓
For returning participants: This deeper pass of Step Five invites Type 7s to share not only what they did, but the discomfort, fear, or emotional pain they were trying to avoid. This is not about losing joy — it is about discovering a deeper, more grounded joy rooted in truth, presence, and connection with God.
Safety & care: Agree with your sponsor on pauses, prayer, and time-outs. You may stop at any time. This is honesty with gentleness.
1) From Confession to Communion
Aim: Move beyond listing wrongs to revealing the emotional discomfort you were trying to escape.
- Deepening prompts:
- What feeling or situation was I trying to avoid?
- What did I fear would happen if I stayed present with it?
- What truth about my pain feels safe to say now?
- Two-sentence share (template):
“When I [behavior], I was avoiding [feeling or discomfort]. It cost [impact]. I am willing to practice [new way] with God’s help.”
2) Somatic Honesty — Let the Body Slow You Down
Aim: Notice where restlessness and escape live in your body.
- 1-minute check-in: Notice chest, legs, and breath. Where do you feel urgency or agitation?
- Breathing practice: Inhale: “I am safe here.” Exhale: “I stay present.”
- Share with your sponsor: “As I say this, I feel it in my ____.” Naming it builds grounding and honesty.
3) Exact Nature = Pattern + Escape Strategy
Aim: Name the pattern and the avoidance strategy beneath it.
- Add this mini-grid to a few key shares:
- Trigger (boredom, pain, limitation)
- Escape Strategy (distraction, planning, indulgence, reframing)
- Impact (on presence, intimacy, follow-through)
- What God Offers Now (grounding, contentment, steadiness)
- Reflection: “What am I most willing to stay present with instead of escaping?”
4) Sponsor Dialogue That Grounds You
Aim: Practice staying with truth instead of reframing, speeding past, or bypassing.
- You say: “Please reflect where I avoid discomfort or reframe instead of feeling.”
- Sponsor says: “Would you be open to staying with…?”
- Your response: “Thank you. I will practice staying present with this.”
5) Releasing the Need to Escape
Aim: Let God hold the pain you no longer need to outrun.
- Begin with: “God, I place my discomfort in Your care.”
- End with: “I choose presence over escape.”
6) Gentle Bridge to Steps 6–9
- Willingness seed (6–7): Which escape pattern am I most willing to soften?
- Amends readiness (8–9): Where has my avoidance impacted others?
Summary of Going Deeper: This deeper pass of Step Five invites Type 7s to move from escaping discomfort to staying present with truth. By naming the patterns they use to avoid pain, they open the door to deeper peace, steadiness, and authentic joy. With God’s help, presence becomes safer than distraction.
If this feels too deep right now, that’s okay.
