STEP 11: Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood God, praying only for knowledge of God’s will for us and the power to carry that out.

For Enneagram Type 1s, Step 11 is about deepening conscious contact with your Higher Power—not through striving or self-correcting, but through your Higher Power’s grace. Ones often try to earn worth by being perceived as being good, perfect, or right. Step 11 invites you to release the critic within and rest in your Higher Power’s acceptance. Here, prayer becomes less about asking how to improve yourself and more about accepting your Higher Power’s loving guidance is trustworthy, that you are already enough. Meditation becomes the quiet place where you let go of judgment, soften your striving, and allow yourself to be loved and guided.

Daily Practices for Step 11

  • Morning Prayer: Begin the day by asking: “Higher Power, help me release my need to be seen as perfect today. Show me how to walk in your will with gentleness and grace.”
  • Meditation: Ones often struggle with a restless mind and inner critic. Try 5 minutes of breath-focused meditation, repeating a phrase like “I am enough.” Expand as you grow more comfortable. Try Insight Timer, or the Surrender School Step 11 meditation.
  • Affirmations/Mantras: These affirmations/mantras counter self-criticism and can be used throughout the day.

    • I am loved and accepted as I am, not as I think I should be.
    • My worth does not depend on being perfect.
    • My Higher Power’s grace covers what I cannot fix.
    • Peace is found in letting go, not in controlling everything.
    • It is safe to rest in my Higher Power’s love.
    • I can release judgment and choose compassion.
    • Doing less correcting allows me to live with more joy.
    • My Higher Power delights in all of me, even my imperfections.

Journaling / Two-Way Prayer:

Two-Way Prayer is a simple practice of writing to your Higher Power, listening, and then writing what you sense your Higher Power saying back. It helps quiet the inner critic and opens you up to your Higher Power’s loving will.

  • Begin by reading program material, focusing on a word or phrase. Ask a specific question related to your struggle as a Type 1, such as: “Higher Power, what do You want me to know about being loved without being perfect?” Or ask generally: “Higher Power, what do You want me to know/do right now?”
  • Pause, breathe, meditate for a few minutes, actively listening to what your Higher Power might be telling you. What are you being guided to understand/hear/do or not do?
  • Write whatever words, phrases, or impressions come to you.

A few additional two-way prayer prompts for a type-1 are:

  • “Higher Power, how do You want me to rest in Your grace today?”
  • “Where am I mistaking perfection for holiness?”
  • “What truth do You want me to embrace about being enough?”
  • “What judgment do I need to release so I can listen for Your will?”

Discernment Pause

Before automatically correcting, improving, or fixing, pause and ask:

  • “Is this truly my Higher Power’s will for me, or am I trying to be perfect to feel worthy?”
  • “Will acting here bring peace—or is it my critic demanding control?”
  • “What belongs to my Higher Power, and what is mine to do?”

* Discernment means aligning your choices with your Higher Power’s direction, not with the inner critic. Over time, it trains you to act from love rather than from the need to be perfect.

Evening Review (Spiritual Awareness)

Unlike Step 10’s focus on resentments and harms, Step 11’s evening review is about presence and awareness. Gently reflect on the following:

  • Where did I notice my Higher Power’s grace today?
  • When did I release judgment and allow acceptance?
  • Where did my inner critic lead me instead of my Higher Power?
  • What guidance did I sense about my Higher Power’s will for me?

* Close with gratitude: “Thank You, Higher Power, for loving me as I am and guiding me beyond the critic’s voice.”

Prayer & Meditation Choices for Type 1s

  • Prayer for Grace: “Higher Power, help me rest in Your love when I feel the urge to fix or correct. Teach me to live in Your grace.”
  • Breath Meditation: Inhale: “I am enough.” Exhale: “I release perfection.”
  • Gratitude List: Each night, write 3 moments where you accepted yourself or others without judgment.
  • Body Practices: Try a body scan to notice where you carry tension from striving, and gently release it.
  • Silence: Practice 2–3 minutes of quiet stillness, simply resting in God’s acceptance.

Step 11 Prayer for Type 1

Higher Power,
Teach me to rest in Your grace instead of striving. Quiet my inner critic and help me hear Your voice of love. Show me that my worth is not in perfection, but in Your presence. Let my prayers be honest, my meditations be peaceful, and my heart open to Your will. Amen.

Summary

Step 11 for Type 1s is an invitation to move from striving to resting. Through prayer and meditation, you discover that conscious contact with your Higher Power is not about being good enough, but about receiving grace. You learn to ask for your Higher Power’s will—not just your critic’s standard—and to trust you will receive the power to carry it out. By practicing stillness, discernment, and two-way prayer, you release the drive to perfect and rest in the truth that you are already loved. From this freedom, your actions become guided, balanced, and rooted in your Higher Power’s care.
