Eights often seek to stay strong and protect themselves or others, but Step 11 invites you to rest in God’s power instead of your own. Here, prayer becomes less about asking for strength to take charge and more about listening for God’s direction. Meditation becomes the quiet place where you release the need to fight or resist and allow yourself to be guided, protected, and loved.
Daily Practices for Step 11
- Morning Prayer: Begin the day by asking: “Higher Power, help me release control today. Show me how to walk in Your strength instead of my own.”
- Meditation: Because Eights carry intensity and energy, practice meditations that emphasize softening—gentle breathwork, body relaxation, or silent stillness. Try Insight Timer, or the Surrender School Step 11 meditation.
- Affirmations/Mantras: These affirmations/mantras counter control and resistance, and can be used throughout the day.
- God’s power is greater than mine.
- I am safe to release control.
- True strength comes from surrender.
- My Higher Power protects and guides me.
- I do not need to fight to be safe.
- Gentleness is not weakness; it is strength in love.
- When I pause, I find God’s direction.
- I am carried by a greater power than myself.
Journaling / Two-Way Prayer:
Two-Way Prayer is a simple practice of writing to your Higher Power, listening, and then writing what you sense your Higher Power saying back. It helps quiet defensiveness and opens you up to your Higher Power’s strength and care.
- Begin by reading program material and asking a question from your Type 8 lens, such as: “Higher Power, what do You want me to know about trusting Your strength today?” Or ask generally: “Higher Power, what do You want me to know/do right now?”
- Pause, breathe, and notice the urge to push or control. Instead, stay open and listen for God’s calm guidance.
- Write whatever words, phrases, or impressions come to you.

Unlike Step 10’s focus on resentments and harms, Step 11’s evening review is about presence and trust. Gently reflect on the following:
- Where did I notice God’s presence and strength today?
- When did I release control and trust instead?
- Where did I act from force or resistance?
- What guidance did I sense about God’s will for me?

- Body Practices: Relax shoulders, unclench fists, and breathe deeply when tension rises.
- Silence: Spend 2–3 minutes sitting quietly, letting God hold your strength and protect you.

- Morning (5–7 min): Hand on heart; breathe. Pray: “God, show me Your will; give me power to carry it out.” Read a short passage; write one Guiding Word (e.g., “gentle,” “listen,” “share power”).
- Midday (60 sec pause): When intensity rises: inhale “I trust” • exhale “I release control.” Ask: “What is Your will here?” Act on the smallest obedient step.
- Evening (5 min): Gratitude for where you felt guided; note one moment of forcing vs. following. Close with: “Thank You for carrying me.”
2) Two-Way Prayer — Type 8 Prompts
Aim: Let God speak to your protector and your tender self.
- “Where today do You want me to share power instead of take it?”
- “How do You want my voice to sound when I carry Your will?”
- “What fight do I lay down so love can lead?”
