Step 10: “Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.”

Step 10 turns Steps 1–9 into a daily rhythm. Each day you will apply what you have learned. This Step is about daily maintenance—keeping your side of the street clean so fear, resentment, and pride don’t harden into disconnection. For Type 8s, Step 10 at Surrender School is about catching protective intensity and control early so that you can redirect your strength toward power with rather than power over. The goal isn’t self-criticism; it’s clarity, connection, and freedom to be useful.


Spot-check in the moment

  1. Watch: Notice the Four basic defenses (selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, fear) usually show up for the Type 8 as control, dominance, intensity, and emotional armor. When these crop up, ask HP for help and choose care over force.
  2. Ask: “HP, please remove what blocks love and connection right now.”
  3. Discuss: Tell a sponsor/fellow promptly—especially if you’re stuck or heated.
  4. Admit & Amend: If you harmed someone, own it and repair promptly.
  5. Help: Turn thoughts to someone you can help; re-enter with humility.

 


Type 8 Lens: Signal, Stop & Swap

The Signal, Stop & Swap Tool is part of Surrender School’s Step 10 practice. Think of it as a lens that helps you spot what’s really going on in the moment. Step 10 can feel abstract until you have something concrete to work with—this tool makes it practical.

Signals are like dashboard lights—clues that protective Eight energy is running the show (not “wrong,” just information). Underneath, there’s often a tender story at play—fears of being controlled, betrayed, or seen as weak. Swaps are the small, doable shifts that bring you back to grounded strength and connection.

  • Signals: Raising voice, pushing pace, “my way,” interrupting, not listening, taking over, withdrawing to stay in control, rejecting help.
  • Underneath: Fear of being controlled/betrayed, powerless over a situation, or appearing weak.
  • Swaps: Soften tone → slow one notch → ask a respectful question (solicit other opinions) → listen with an open mind → name impact → invite input.

 


Daily Review (evening, 3–5 minutes)

  1. The Four: Did selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, or fear show up?
  2. Defenses: Did control, dominance, intensity, or emotional armor activate? Was I able to use a swap?
  3. Repairs: What did I promptly admit? What amends or living amends do I owe tomorrow?
